Welcome to a new school year at Sterling Elementary! I am grateful for the Sterling community and being part of the Eagle family, where we can SOAR to great heights!

Excusing an Absence on Skyward

We love you and want to see you at school!

School attendance has long term benefits. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. In case of illness or other incident where you may need to miss school:

To excuse a student on the app:

When parents sign up for the Skyward app, they will select a four-digit code.
Put in your four-digit code and continue to the app
Select the “hamburger button” (the triple bar or trigram symbol) on the top right.
From here you have two options, the first option (the message tab), will show you through the notification when your student was marked absent and what you need to excuse. With the attendance tab you simply submit a request.

Either of these two options will open a pop-up.
Complete the following information:
Student
Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional – but very helpful, especially if you want to “excuse 2^nd hour”)
If you have more than one student and want this attendance request submitted for another student (maybe your family will be attending a funeral and all students need to be excused) then you can “Copy” the request and select additional students.
Submit

To submit a request from the website:

Click on the Families tab across the top
Click on Skyward for Parents
Log in
On the top right click student (if you only have one student you will just see your student’s name)
In the drop-down menu select the student’s name you need to excuse
Select Attendance in the menu on the left hand side
Click on the hyperlink at the top of the page “Absence Request.”
An “Add Request” pop-up block will open
Complete the following blocks:
Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional, but once again, very helpful)
Save
Once you have “Saved” you will receive an email notification that an absence request has been submitted.
After the request has been processed, parents will receive a notification in Skyward
“(Student’s name) Absence Request has been (approved or denied)
The Absence Request submitted for (student) on (date) has been (approved or denied).
If a request is denied, a reason must be provided. It will then say “Go to your Absence Requests for further information.”

Megan Downard is Sterling Elementary's Beverley Taylor Sorenson Dance Teacher. She has 20 years as a teacher and 9 years as a BTS Dance Specialist. She has had a passion for dance since the age of five. She facilitates learning across all art forms, specializes in cross-curricular projects, and encourages students to explore their creativity.

About BTS

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program provides arts-integrated instruction to elementary students, effectively increasing student performance in every subject. BTS Arts puts specialists trained in visual art, dance, music and theatre in elementary schools to develop lesson plans that incorporate art. The Utah State Board of Education administers the program statewide, and collaborates with administrators and university staff from Brigham Young University, Utah Tech University, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, and Westminster College.

Beverley Taylor Sorenson was instrumental in reinvigorating elementary arts education in Utah. She worked with area schools and led the effort to ensure Utah children have a complete and well-rounded education. Beverley’s mission began when she recognized the severe lack of resources for teacher training in the arts and the lack of legislative funding for school-based arts programs. Through Beverley’s driving influence, arts education in Utah received a significant boost when the Utah State Legislature funded the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, which supports teacher training at colleges and universities all over the state. The program also pays for arts supplies, equipment and materials, and supports ongoing research to ensure quality implementation and results. Beverley’s inspired work continues to impact thousands of bright young minds to this day.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Directions

Please remember to follow the drop-off and pick-up procedures to keep all students safe. Buses are only allowed in the bus lane on the north end. Cars, please use the pick up lane in the front (West side) of the building. Follow all traffic laws and directions from crossing guards. Always pull as far forward as possible to help traffic flow & do not park in the pick-up lane during dismissal. When crossing the street and drop-off lane, please use the crosswalks. Be a good example to our students. *Special parking spots have been reserved in the front parking lot for preschool & kindergarten parents.
