Attendance
Excusing an Absence on Skyward
We love you and want to see you at school!
School attendance has long term benefits. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. In case of illness or other incident where you may need to miss school:
To excuse a student on the app:
- When parents sign up for the Skyward app, they will select a four-digit code.
- Put in your four-digit code and continue to the app
- Select the “hamburger button” (the triple bar or trigram symbol) on the top right.
- From here you have two options, the first option (the message tab), will show you through the notification when your student was marked absent and what you need to excuse. With the attendance tab you simply submit a request.
- 1. Message Tab
- Attendance Notification
- View
- Add Absent Request
- OR
- 2. Attendance
- Add Absent Request
- Either of these two options will open a pop-up.
- Complete the following information:
- Student
- Date/Time
- Reason
- Comment (optional – but very helpful, especially if you want to “excuse 2nd hour”)
- If you have more than one student and want this attendance request submitted for another student (maybe your family will be attending a funeral and all students need to be excused) then you can “Copy” the request and select additional students.
- Submit
To submit a request from the website:
- Tooeleschools.org
- Click on the Families tab across the top
- Click on Skyward for Parents
- On the top right click student (if you only have one student you will just see your student’s name)
- In the drop-down menu select the student’s name you need to excuse
- Select Attendance in the menu on the left hand side
- Click on the hyperlink at the top of the page “Absence Request.”
- An “Add Request” pop-up block will open
- Complete the following blocks:
- Date/Time
- Reason
- Comment (optional, but once again, very helpful)
- Save
- Once you have “Saved” you will receive an email notification that an absence request has been submitted.
- After the request has been processed, parents will receive a notification in Skyward
- “(Student’s name) Absence Request has been (approved or denied)
- The Absence Request submitted for (student) on (date) has been (approved or denied).
- If a request is denied, a reason must be provided. It will then say “Go to your Absence Requests for further information.”

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Directions
Please remember to follow the drop off & pick up procedures to keep all students safe. Buses only allowed in the bus lane on the north end. Cars, please use the pick up lane in the front (West side) of the building. Follow all traffic laws and directions from crossing guards. Always pull as far forward as possible to help traffic flow & do not park in the pick-up lane during dismissal. When crossing the street and drop-off lane, please use the crosswalks. Be the good example to our students. *Special parking spots have been reserved in the front parking lot for preschool & kindergarten parents.
Thank you.
Here is a picture map of drop off for Sterling Elementary. There is also an animation file in the story section and video. Thanks for helping us keep our students safe during pickup/drop off. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Supply Lists
Elementary Classroom Supplies and Donations
At the beginning of each year, many parents request a teacher supply list so they can furnish some items as a donation to the classroom setting. Utah law states that supplies will be provided by the school, however, in the 2012 Legislative Session it was approved for elementary schools to compile and provide a suggested list of supplies that may be brought/donated/furnished by parents on a voluntary basis that will be used in the classroom.
Any list must include the following language: “Notice: The items on this list will be used during the regular school day. They may be brought from home on a voluntary basis. Otherwise, they will be furnished by the school.”
Tooele County School District appreciates all the supplies that parents choose to donate to help our students. If you are interested in donating supplies, we have created a suggested list by grade level.
Many classroom teachers appreciate general donations of closeable plastic storage bags of various sizes for classroom use.
Please check with your students teacher to see if they do "community supplies" where a table group will share crayons/pencils or individual supplies.

Volunteer Information
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
App Garden Volunteer Tracker Tooele County School District Volunteer Registration Program
We are so excited to be welcoming volunteers back to Sterling Elementary! Tooele County School District utilizes Volunteer Tracker for volunteer applications and signing up for volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering, please go to the following website:
https://appgarden5.app-garden.com/VolTrackUT30.nsf
Once you have completed the application, it will be reviewed, and you will be contacted if further information is needed. Tooele County School District, in conjunction with Volunteer Tracker, uses BCI to run all background checks for volunteer applicants.
If you have never applied to volunteer before, you will need to have your fingerprints taken at the district office before you can be approved to volunteer.
If you have applied and been a volunteer before, you may not need to have your fingerprints taken again; however, this of course only applies if your fingerprints were taken through the District’s new system for background checks using BCI. This is something that will be checked by the District, and you will be notified if you are required to have your fingerprints taken again.
PLEASE NOTE:
Once your initial volunteer application and background check have been approved, you will be notified by email every year on the anniversary date of your applications approval, to renew your status as a volunteer. If you do this, you will not be required to have your fingerprints taken again; however, if you fail to respond to the yearly reminder email, you will have to complete the volunteer registration process again. So PLEASE make sure you mark your calendar and remember to watch for that yearly email reminder.
Your students’ safety and care are our #1 priority, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this process.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office @ (435)882-9001.
Respectfully,
David Woolf
